      Hey everyone,

I am somewhat intrigued by the dichotomy between the technological supremacy of Silicone Valley and the U.S.-American refusal to adopt the metric system.

How much of a competitive advantage or disadvantage is created by the fact that we are the last country on Earth to use Imperial measurements?

Is this situation merely a result of psychological inertia--like backing out of a parking space or driveway instead of the more prudent backing in--or are there actually valid economical interests at play?

What are your thoughts and opinions?
Do you think  the country should radically convert to the metric system, just like it is going to convert to digital-only TV?

      Have a super awesome day!

Interesting idea Dominik. I think converting to the metric system makes a lot of sense, though I assume that most professionals who work on an international level already have a knowledge of both measurements. It is such a chore to have to convert from one system to another. Perhaps having a general knowledge of how, for example, ferenheit compares to celcius, miles to kilometers, etc. would be helpful for our society as a whole. Theoretically, we might even come to not only speak each others' mathematical languages, but to better understand one anothers' culture and beliefs as well!

At first glance I thought it would be easy to find statistics on the average number miles driven and the number of automobiles in the U.S., however, I'm having a hard time.  If anyone is willing to share their sources with me, I would greatly appreciate it.
        Thanks

Just curious...  How much extra would you pay for a hydrogen or battery powered automobile assuming all other things constant (design, speed, reliability, etc.)?  For example, 10% more, 20%, 50%, etc?

I believe hydrogen is the way to go, but does your question relate only to the retail cost of the automobile, or does the "extra" cost include possible premium pricing for alternative fuel, be it electricity or hydrogen? Currently, I would love to be able to afford a n y car; if I were, I would probably be willing to spend 20% more over a gasoline-powered vehicle, but only if I lived in Southern California, which has the highest density of hydrogen fueling stations in the U.S. Right now, Eugenians would have to use "backyard hydrogen." Try googling "BMW 7 Hydrogen." It is "real" cars like that which will attract people to alternative fuel technologies, not glorified golf carts. My dreamcar is a Hummer H1 Alpha that runs on hydrogen alone and has a solid fuel (hydride) tank. But yes, it still only exists in dreams.
