Course Documents -> Week 10 -> More Laptop Evolution Experiments

We will now engage in a number of laptop simulations related to species survivability through Darwinian selection but this time there will be random extinction events.

Being by downloading the simulator (if this does not open in a new window, go back and right click on the link to open in new window)

AND EVERYONE NEEDS TO FOLLOW DIRECTIONS!

  • First Activity: Survive

Goal: Get your Tribe to survive catastrophe

Instructions: (Note: if you cheat the system, you will be detected)

      1. Select Random Distribution and enter in your determined tribe color (i.e. which color has the highest number
      2. Select Type I extinction event (note the event won't kick in until after one generation)
      3. Click the step button one time and then publish your result
      4. Now run to the end - if your tribe does not survive then do not publish; only surviving tribes publish

  • Second Activity: From submissive to Dominant

    Goal: The Rats Win

Poor little purple - they are at the bottom of the survival probability chain - they need a lot help.

      Instructions:

      1. Select Equal Distribution
      2. Select NONE for the extinction type
      3. Run simulation until the end to verify that no Purple's survive. Publish when they become extinct
      4. Hit Reset
      5. Select Equal Distribution
      6. Select type 3 extinction event
      7. run to the end and publish; let's see now how many purple tribes survive
